Cybera is a not-for-profit organization that works to spur and support innovation, for the economic benefit of Alberta, through the use of cyberinfrastructure. Cybera’s access to computing infrastructure, in-house cloud expertise, and a high-speed, high-bandwidth advanced network enables academic, industry and government groups to innovate in priority areas, including health, energy, the environment, and emerging technologies.
Cybera has offices in Calgary and Edmonton and collaborates with public and private sector partners to accelerate research and product development that meets the needs of today’s society. Cybera also operates CyberaNet, a high-speed, high-bandwidth advanced network in Alberta, and provides project management to Compute Canada/WestGrid, a consortium that provides advanced computing resources in support of research across Canada.
Mission
Cybera’s mission is to support the development of a vibrant and diversified Alberta economy that attracts forward-thinking, technology-driven companies and ground-breaking research. This will accelerate Alberta’s competitive advantage, foster a growing workforce, and drive innovation in a variety of public and private sectors, including health, education, resource management, manufacturing, and information technology. In turn, Albertans will benefit from having greater access to the technologies, services and opportunities they need to scale their businesses, advance their education, and support their families.
History
With its roots in academic networking, Cybera's predecessor organizations were initially the Western Universities Research Consortium Network (WURCNet) and Netera Alliance. Both were primarily concerned with networking, with Netera Alliance being designated Alberta’s Optical Regional Advanced Network (ORAN). Cybera expanded from Netera Alliance in 2006 and remains the ORAN provider for Alberta.
