Security Systems Administrator

Cybera is looking for a full-time Security Systems Administrator to join our team in Calgary. This is a term position, ending December 2019. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a strong understanding of network protocols and system behaviours. The Security Systems Administrator will be responsible for developing a Security Operations Centre, and will work closely with Cybera’s National Research and Education Network (NREN) partners. The workload is highly dynamic, so the individual must possess great flexibility and be able to meet tight deadlines under short notice. Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Act as first point of contact for security related incidents impacting the Cybera network

  • Define, implement and maintain corporate security policies, directives and procedures — such as an incident response plan

  • Plan, implement and upgrade security measures and controls — such as deploying, maintaining and upgrading security incident event management systems, and manage intrusion detection and prevention systems

  • Analyze and prioritize security events and incidents

  • Conduct internal and external security audits

  • Recommend and install appropriate IT security tools and countermeasures

  • Provide security awareness training to other stakeholder groups

  • Coordinate security plans with third party vendors

 

Mandatory Skills and Competencies:

  • Windows, Unix and Linux operating systems

  • Solid understanding of the TCP/IP stack, Layer 2, and Layer 3 networking

  • DevOps / Agile mentality

  • Software programing and scripting practice

  • The ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and maintain confidentiality

  • Very strong verbal and written English communication skills

 

Desired Skills and Competencies:

  • Two to five years of relevant experience in an operational IT Security environment, such as SOC or CSIRT

  • Hands-on experience investigating common types of attacks, such as brute-force, phishing, DDoS and data exfiltration

  • Experience with conducting vulnerabilities and information risk assessments

  • Knowledge of IT security frameworks (NIST, ISF, ISO 27001, et cetera)

  • Experience with forensics investigation and analysis of security incidents (how and why a security breach or a compromised system occurred)

  • Good understanding of social engineering practices used by malicious actors

  • Experience with penetration testing of applications and infrastructure

  • In-depth knowledge of security event management, network security monitoring, log collection and correlation

 

Certifications and Education:

  • College diploma or university degree in computer science or related field(s), or a suitable combination of education, experience, or other relevant training.

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) (desired)

  • Certified Ethical Hacker (desired)

Developer

Cybera is seeking a full-time (contract) Developer in either Edmonton or Calgary to work in a Agile DevOps environment. The individual would work with our data science team to develop, maintain, and support software applications to analyze large amounts of data  running in a cloud or physical environment. This is not an exclusive software development role, nor is it an exclusive operations role, rather it endeavors to combine best practices of both into a true DevOps methodology. The workload is highly dynamic and consequently, the individual must possess great flexibility and be able to meet tight deadlines under short notice. Must have Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with current development best practices such as version control, coding standards, test automation and continuous deployment

  • Experience in modern front end development such as ReactJS, Angular, VueJS and related technologies such as HTML/CSS/Javascript.

  • Experience with back end web development frameworks and concepts such as Python, Ruby or other typical backend languages.

  • Participate in end-to-end team software development definition and implementation

  • Research, evaluate and recommend new software solutions and technologies related to cloud computing systems and virtualization

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade and make modifications in the software code as required

  • Work collaboratively to develop functional and user requirements

  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Minimum 3-5 years industry experience as a developer

  • Minimum 1-2 years in web development

 

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working on an Agile team

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as OpenStack and AWS

  • Coding skills in R or Julia

  • Knowledge of Big Data and Data Science technologies such as Hadoop, machine learning toolkits and graph databases

  • Experience with the application of advanced statistical techniques and concepts

  • Experience with advanced visualization packages, such as ggplot, Plotly, and D3.js is an asset

  • Experience with ExpressJS or other NodeJS web development framework

  • Experience with GraphQL
