WestGrid Founding Principal Investigator Jonathan Schaeffer has been promoted to the role of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Technology) at the University of Alberta, effective July 1, 2008. Schaeffer is assuming the position from Cybera board member Paul Sorenson at the end of Sorenson's term.
Schaeffer, who is both an iCORE and Canada Research Chair, is leaving his current position as head of the computing science department. His research interests include aritifical intelligence and parallel/distributed computing. He is best known for his work in computer games. This past spring, he garnered international attention for solving checkers.
Sorenson has had a long list of achievements during his time as Vice-Provost, including the formation of Cybera Inc. from Netera Alliance last summer.
