Researchers across Canada working on computing-intensive projects, like sequencing the genetic structure of diseases or processing astronomical data sets, are getting an extra boost this month with two new computing resources coming online at the University of Alberta.
The Jasper cluster consists of of 240 nodes, each with 12 cores and 24 GB of RAM, equalling in 2,880 cores in total. While still in beta form, the cluster’s parallel computing capabilities will make it a valuable resource for research involving data-intensive simulations, such as petroleum reservoir modeling, molecular simulations, and genomics modeling.
The Hungabee cluster has 2,048 cores sharing 16 TB of RAM in a single system image, and will support research projects requiring large amounts of memory, such as those related to engineering, artificial intelligence and bioinformatics.
Both systems are accessible to researchers across the country, and will enable breakthrough discoveries for complex science initiatives that require fast processing and a lot of storage space.
