Cybera Introduces High-Definition Videoconferencing

29 January 2008
Cybera’s Edmonton and Calgary Cyberports now offer free high-definition videoconferencing services for Cybera member organizations.

The new LifeSize-brand equipment features 1280 x 720 resolution, wide-angle, high-definition cameras and the ability to transmit data at up to 5.0Mbps for point-to-point sessions.

The units also provide data-sharing capabilities and will provide users with a richer meeting experience by making remote participants seem more lifelike.

The Cyberports are used to help users collaborate over distance for a number of reasons, including research exchanges, PhD defenses and job interviews. This month, Dr. Chris Herd, Associate Professor with the University of Alberta Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department, used the Edmonton facility to connect with the Flory Academy of Sciences and Technology in Moorpark, California. Dr. Herd and an associate from the biological sciences department fielded questions from a 2nd grade class at Flory on the topic: "What happened to the dinosaurs?" Approximately 80 students participated in the event.
