Cybera Names Robin Winsor as CEO

Cybera is pleased to announce the appointment of Robin Winsor as President and CEO. Winsor, a Calgary entrepreneur with nearly 20 years experience in the private sector, joins the organization following Brian Unger who was appointed Interim President and CEO by Cybera’s Board of Directors in May 2009. Winsor brings a strong background of experience in sectors such as oil and gas, seismic, geophysics, and medical science. Following Winsor’s appointment, Unger will continue to serve on Cybera’s Board of Directors and Cybera’s International Strategic Advisory Committee.

Alberta Innovates Board Announced

23 November 2009
The Board of Directors of Alberta’s new research and innovation agencies has been announced. The five Alberta Innovates agencies come into being January 1, 2010, replacing 10 former provincially funded research and innovation organizations. The new system will better align resources, making it more responsive to researchers and entrepreneurs, more accountable to Alberta taxpayers, and more competitive in the global economy. Alberta Innovates will contribute to The Way Forward, the Government of Alberta’s plan for a strong economic recovery, which includes ensuring that Alberta's industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.

The following leaders will guide the new agencies as chairs of the boards of directors:

  • Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions: Art Froehlich, Partner and Strategic Advisor, AdFarm
  • Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions: Eric Newell, Chancellor Emeritus, University of Alberta
  • Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions: Robert A. Seidel, Q.C., National Managing Partner, Davis LLP
  • Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures: Ron Triffo, Chair, Stantec Inc.
  • Alberta Research and Innovation Authority: Dr. Marvin Fritzler, Arthritis Society Research Chair, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary

Cybera Projects Receive Over $2 Million in Research Funding


9 November 2009
Cybera’s pilot projects, the Cloud-Enabled Space Weather Modeling and Data Assimilation Platform (CESWP) and Geospatial Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Sensing (GeoCENS), are recipients of CANARIE's second-round of Network-Enabled Platform Program (NEP) funding. The NEP Program funds the development of tools and software that help researchers, in a wide range disciplines, to fully exploit and share the massive amount of data and research that flow along the CANARIE Network. The GeoCENS project, which was awarded $1.1 million in NEP funding, will develop an interactive web-based portal for scientific analysis and social networking among the biogeoscience research community. The CESWP project, which was awarded $933,000 in NEP funding, will simplify researcher access to space weather simulation tools using cloud computing technologies. Read the media release>


Call for Innovation Voucher Partnerships

Advance your business' commercialization process with Cybera
. As one of the Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program’s qualified service providers, Cybera will partner with businesses to help them accelerate their commercialization process. The Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program is an Alberta Advanced Education and Technology initiative to assist technology and knowledge-driven small businesses with advancing their products to market. Eligible businesses can apply for vouchers up to $50,000 in value.

The criteria of an eligible business are:

  • technology or knowledge driven
  • registered in Canada
  • conducts at least 50 per cent of its business in Alberta
  • 50 or fewer staff
  • last year's gross income did not exceed $5,000,000

Cybera consults on and provides access to data management resources and the latest advancements in computing technologies, including cloud, grid and high performance networking and computing. Companies can work with Cybera to use these resources to research, test and develop new technologies, and to launch their products in the most effective and innovative ways.

Cybera Launches New Online Presence

Cybera is pleased to announce a new look for its website, which is now featuring Summit 09 highlights and the 2008-09 Cybera Annual Report. While maintaining the same address the site is sporting a new design and a dynamic layout developed for stakeholders and other visitors to easily navigate and find useful information on Cybera’s projects, services and activities. New features also include a revised Projects gallery and the Cybera Blog.
