Calgary Technologies Inc. (CTI) prepares to become part of a new, full‐service regional organization that will take technological innovations from idea to market, strengthening Calgary’s economy and utilizing its entrepreneurial and intellectual potential. Innovate Calgary, will integrate CTI and University Technologies International (UTI). CTI’s Board of Directors was restructured to effectively position the organization for this potential transition. A small and nimble interim board will guide the business through this process.

Remote Collaboration: Coast-To-Coast Experience & Future Directions: April 24 and 25, 2009
The IRMACS Centre at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, will host the first Coast-To-Coast Seminar Retreat on April 24 and April 25, 2009.
The retreat will provide participants with a forum to exchange their experiences in delivering remote collaborative events in a scientific context. The retreat will include discussion of the scientific, technical, and organizational aspects of such events, and discuss future directions of the development of remote scientific collaboration.
This event is recommended for academics who use or plan to use remote collaboration tools for delivering their lectures or for performing some of their scientific activities, and technicians and administrators involved in support of remote collaboration among groups of scientists.
The registration deadline is April 13, 2009. The fee is $60 CAN.

Members from the first round of CANARIE Network-Enabled Projects gathered at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on April 20 - 22 for the CANARIE NEP-1 Synergy Workshop. Among the attendees were project representatives from Cybera. CANARIE reported the platforms could only have emerged from discipline communities that shared similar or identical research challenges. The workshop was an opportunity for the 10 discipline specific projects to share their work and their challenges and to explore the possibilities for synergy amongst them.

Eight additional organizations will access the CANARIE Network through its Infrastructure Extensions Program. Launched in 2007, the $15M Program creates extensions to Canada's research and education network that will accelerate research, enable national and international collaboration, improve access to knowledge, and contribute to the development of cyber infrastructure and e-research in Canada.

Stuart Kauffman is the author of a title on the short list for the Warwick Prize. The prize will be awarded Feb. 24 at the University of Warwick. The publication, Reinventing the Sacred:A New View of Science, Reason and Religion, argues the universe has a creativity to be regarded as divine or sacred, rather than a supernatural god. Kauffman is a Professor of Biological Science and Physics and Astronomy, an Adjunct Professor of Philosophy and the Director of the Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics at the University of Calgary, as well as the iCORE Chair of Biocomplexity and Informatics.
