Cybera News July 2008

President's Message

Cybera has confirmed two big events since our last newsletter. First, we’re proud to announce our second annual Summit in Banff, AB on September 29-30, 2008. We’ve lined up some very exciting keynote speakers, including Paul Strong, Distinguished Research Scientist with eBay, and Nora Young, host of CBC Radio’s Spark program, which focuses on trends in technology. We'll be posting details on our Summit as they arise: http://www.cybera.ca/summit.

Another exciting event Cybera will be hosting is Open Grid Forum (OGF) in 2009. OGF is the primary international community of users, developers, and vendors leading the pervasive adoption of grid computing for research and industry worldwide. OGF will be co-located with WestGrid's annual conference as well as the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid. This event will give Cybera and WestGrid remarkable international exposure and will pu tAlberta on the world-wide cyberinfrastructure map.

I’d also like to welcome new Cybera employees, Adam Lukaszuk, Cyberinfrastructure Business Coordinator, and Dale Hudjik, Project Manager, both located at the University of Alberta. In Calgary, we welcome Natasha Kapty, Senior Systems Manager, and Karim Teja, Chief Financial Officer, both located at the University of Calgary. Cybera is growing to better advance, integrate, leverage, and sustain cyberinfrastructure to support and connect the knowledge economy in Alberta. Let us know how we can help you.

Cybera Receives Funding through CANARIE’s NEP Program

CANARIE Inc., Canada's advanced network organization, announced projects on June 26, 2008, that will receive funding under its Network-Enabled Platforms (NEP) program. Two of Cybera’s cyberinfrastructure pilot projects received funding under this program. Total funding for all projects is $15 million.

"The projects announced today will be developing tools and infrastructure that will support sharing complex data sets, facilitate the use of remote equipment, and enhance the capabilities of collaborative research teams" said Andrew Bjerring, President & CEO of CANARIE Inc.

The NEP program supports projects which:

  • Accelerate the development, implementation and use of sustained research platforms;
  • Facilitate the development of virtual organizations;
  • Increase international connectedness of Canadian research platforms;
  • Advance the use of platforms by Canada's leading researchers; and
  • Promote the sharing of best practices and standards related to platforms, associated middleware and virtual organizations.

In Alberta, two projects were approved, both of which involve Cybera Inc. One is GeoChronos, a collaboration between Cybera, the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta and the University of Victoria. The goal of this project is to develop a gateway to equip earth observation scientists with tools to develop new collaborative approaches to data analysis. The expected result is an innovative platform that will harness the benefits of social networking technologies and extend them into the scientific community.

The other Alberta project is the Canadian Space Science Data Portal, a project involving Cybera, the University of Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan and the University of New Brunswick. The goal of this project is to enable and simplify researcher access to space science analytic tools and data. It is expected to shape the development of the space science community as well as help refine productivity safeguards for Canadian industries impacted by space weather phenomena.

All projects are expected to take 2-3 years for completion. To view videos of Cybera's projects, click here.

CANARIE received funding from the Government of Canada in Budget 2007 to further develop the advanced network for Canadian researchers and scientists and to enable network-based technology innovation. More information may be found at www.canarie.ca.
