Internet Buying Group Offers 11th Major Price Decrease

As a holiday present to our members, Cybera is once again dropping the price of bandwidth for the Internet Buying Group. As of January 1, 2019, the price will go down from $2.25 per Mbps to $1.75 per Mbps, a 22% decrease.

This is the 11th price drop for the bulk buying service since it was launched in 2012. Member organizations of the Internet Buying Group (including post-secondary institutions, K-12 school authorities, health care centres, and other government institutions) have saved over $5.3 million in network fees to date. As well as providing valuable savings, the buying group also offers other benefits, such as the ability to take part in Cyberaโ€™s shared Virtual Firewall Service, as well as achieve free bandwidth traffic over IPv6.

The Internet Buying Group is also set up to be flexible and responsive to membersโ€™ needs, allowing them to adjust their bandwidth requirements on a month-to-month basis. This allows educators to stay ahead of the fluctuating demand for internet throughout the year.

โ€œThe original goal of the Internet Buying Group was to create a more equitable market for Albertaโ€™s public sector institutions to buy internet,โ€ says COO Barb Carra. โ€œOver the years, we have seen a dramatic shift in the landscape, with bandwidth prices coming down for many institutions. We are pleased that, thanks to programs like the Internet Buying Group, most schools in the province no longer need to cap the amount of internet used by staff and students. This has led to an explosion in the use of online learning tools and platforms that are giving kids the skills needed to compete in the future workforce.โ€
