Cloud-Enabled Space Weather Modelling and Data Assimilation Platform

To simplify researcher access to space weather simulation tools and to use cloud technologies to dramatically improve the sustainability, flexibility and performance of these tools, resulting in improved researcher productivity and a reduction in operational complexity and costs.
Determining certain space weather fluctuations requires new data sets formed through international cooperation and complex modeling. The Cloud-Enabled Space Weather Modeling and Data Assimilation Platform (CESWP) integrated such modeling and simulation functions into the existing data capabilities of the Canadian Space Sciences Data Portal (CSSDP). The project used an infrastructure-as-a-service approach to creating a space science ‘cloud’, which directly responded to the needs of the research community. It also enabled Alberta space scientists to collaborate with international partners.
How CESWP affects you:
Space weather fluctuations have an impact on communication, power and other distribution systems. For example, energy flares from the sun can create solar winds that slow down or halt satellite communications. Scientists are studying ways to forecast such phenomena in an effort to avoid interruptions to these vital systems.
