Important Notice: Upcoming vote on Cybera’s new membership structure

A More Inclusive and Collaborative Future for Cybera

Cybera is evolving — and so is the way our members are shaping our direction. As part of our commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and community governance, we are proposing an update to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) voting structure.

Why change the current voting structure?

Currently, only Class A members are eligible to vote on Cybera’s board appointments and annual budget at our AGM.

While this structure initially served us well, Cybera’s membership and mission have expanded significantly over the last decade. To better reflect our communities’ diversity and foster greater collaboration, we are updating the voting structure to give all member groups a voice.

Proposed new voting structure

Under the proposed bylaw amendment, the total voting share for future Cybera AGMs will be distributed amongst the attendees as follows:

  • Post-Secondary Institutions: 50%
  • K–12 Sector: 40%
  • Municipalities, research centres, and other not-for-profit partners: 10%

What this means for members

This balanced approach ensures that every member group plays a meaningful role in Cybera’s governance while recognizing

  1. The post-secondary sector’s foundational role in creating Cybera
  2. The operational funding Cybera receives from Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education, and
  3. The proportional use of Cybera’s network and services by our core educational institutions

Your participation matters

To make this change official, our members must approve the amendment to Cybera’s bylaws.

We will be inviting all member representatives to attend a Special General Meeting (SGM) in early 2026, where the proposed new voting structure will be presented and voted on.

Your input and participation are crucial as we continue to build a more inclusive and collaborative Cybera community.

Stay tuned for more details about the SGM date and registration!
