Investigating Sedgewick’s internet speeds
The Town of Sedgewick has teamed up with Alberta’s non-profit technology agency, Cybera, to test home internet speeds. Our goal is to identify any infrastructure gaps, to improve internet access for everyone.
If you struggle to make it through a video call or play an online game, it could be because the internet infrastructure connecting your home or business is outdated, or spread too thin.
While government funding exists for rural communities to build or upgrade broadband infrastructure, those funds are based on internet access maps that may have gaps in their data. These data gaps can result in communities being denied funding, despite residents experiencing poor internet connectivity.
By participating in this home internet speed testing, you will be supporting Sedgewick to build the case it needs for broadband infrastructure funding.
How it works
A small device connected to your router or modem will measure the speed and latency of your internet connection for one month. The device is called PE241, and is commonly used for speed testing. It cannot access anything on your computer or devices, and it can’t see your internet content.
This project will come at no cost to you, including delivery or setup, and the device will not slow down your internet!
